An Introduction to French Verse is offered as a free pdf ebook, with translations into English verse, style notes and references.
Coverage in this second volume is from the French Romantics to the Symbolists, essentially from Chénier to Valéry. The poems chosen are among the best known in the language, and are further selected from those whose translations make acceptable English poems.
French versification is a little technical. The basic rules, expectations and principles are summarized in each introductory section, and then illustrated at greater length in the translations that follow.
All poems are preceded by a brief explanation of French verse forms and objectives, the main features of the literary period, and a biographical sketch of the poets concerned.
